trying to name OCs in a nutshell

Posted by RosieUV - May 23rd, 2022

Has any other artist/writer had a problem where they come up with a name for an OC and it turns out it's the name of some actor you've never heard before but is still relevant enough to have their own Wikipedia article?

That's always why I google search me OCs name to see if it's:

  1. A real person
  2. A character off a cartoon
  3. A swear word in another language

Usually nowadays I just take the first name from some random character in a show and combine it with a random object as the last name. I used to just type random gibberish onto my computer until it forms a pronounceable word which is why a lot of my OCs from 1-2 years ago are just random letters merged together. Or just rip it from an old character I don't care about anymore which is why I have about 3 characters named Charlotte.

Although I remember one OC I got the name off some Discord username one of my online friends had, and didn't realise until a couple months later it's a slang word for 'Communist'

With me I base them on mostly myself, as well as other people in my life or people I have a fascination with, like famous authors and historical people. That's usually the core of it. Other times it be based on stuff I like, such as hit movies, cartoons, video games, and anime. The name itself isn't hard, but the hardest part is trying to make it sound unique. Once you get past that, the world is your oyster.
